NOTICE: Venues need your support more than ever during the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

A nationwide lockdown is currently in place in England, and you are required by law to stay at home. Hospitality venues can still provide food takeaway and delivery services, but can only sell alcohol by delivery service.

But please be aware that opening hours and services may be different to those displayed here. Before visiting or ordering from any venue, we strongly advise you to check its website or social media, or get in touch with them first to avoid disappointment.

If you see any details here that need updating, please let us know by submitting feedback on the pub.

About the Pub

Recently refurbished (March 2019), good choice of real ales. Strong emphasis on eating with good selection of mid-range meals. A delightful back street inn.

Historic Interest

Also site of former Phoenix brewery. This pub was listed as the Compasses in the 1891 census, which suggests that the Compasses, Acton Green, Sudbury, listed in 1839-40 Pigot's Directory may refer to this pub. In June 1982 edition of Last Orders*** it was reported that landlord, Les Scott had been ill recently & had time off over the recent bank holiday, the first time he had not worked over a BH since 1953! The Phoenix Court flats nearby are built on the site of the defunct Phoenix Brewery, so named because it arose from the ashes of a fire in 1890. This pub reopened in Oct 2013. Photographs of this pub and more historical information about it can be found at suffolkcamra.co.uk/pubs/pub/952
