About the Pub
Historic Interest
The Grade II Listed building is thought to mainly date from the 18th century. The piece of land on which the pub stands may have been (and may still be) part of the parish or manor of Wattisham? This small area of land is totally detached by about a mile from Wattisham village. So, although it may be considered correct to state the Lion pub as being in Wattisham - as in 1874 White's Directory - to most appearances it is located in the town & urban area of Bildeston. (information from Margaret Joseph) Update. Records at A Vision of Britain show that the Red Lion was transferred from Wattisham parish to Bildeston on August 18th, 1882. This explains why it's often listed in the former parish. A report in the Ipswich Journal** in Nov 1880 states that : "Died suddenly on the 30th October from Bronchitis at the Red Lion, Dorcas, aged 66, wife of Mr W S Melton."
