About the Pub
Following a 2-year closure this venue REOPENED at the end of May 2019. The new freeholder is Barts Pub Ltd, operator Harcourt Inns.
Very close to Ladbroke Grove tube station, the pub was built in the mid-1860s in the "Kensington Italianate" style and still has an attractive Victorian carved timber frontage in polished red granite. The recent renovation has moved the bar to the side of what was always one room but with the bar in the middle – this has opened up quite a space which may be very useful in terms of volume. The kitchen has a Parisian bistro-style menu meeting influences from the Montreal food scene while championing unusual cuts of meat. The first floor restaurant is enormous and used to be where the music/theatre took place. The new owners have stated that live music will remain a feature of the pub.
The decor is quite traditional – no fancy furniture. The three Victorian columns in the centre of the space have been retained in their original state, and all the windows are as were (giving a very big and unique corner light space) and importantly the original woodwork has been kept in the upper part of the windows, particularly the engravings which are very fine.
There is one regular real ale and two changing ones, plus a large keg range.
Known as an Irish pub in earlier decades and the KPH initials are jokingly said to have meant "Keep Paddy Happy". Also said to have been the HQ of those instigating the Notting Hill race riots of 1958.
Historic Interest
This pub was a wartime favourite of Timothy Evans, later wrongly convicted and hanged for the Rillington Place serial murders. The actual serial killer John Christie had a stint as a barman in the pub. The miscarriage of justice was a main factor leading to the abolition of capital punishment. Later, the pub hosted singer Tom Jones's first London gig.
