About the Pub

Busy corner pub, popular with tourists, office workers and postal staff from the nearby sorting office. Licensed in 1766 and named after John Manners, Marquis of Granby, who advanced £200 to former warrant officers who had served under him to open a tavern including the Granby name on the sign. One of the few pubs in the area not generally frequented by the wartime Fitzrovia crowd as it was then looked on as too violent; which is why Dylan Thomas is said to have come here to pick fights with the guardsmen who had themselves dropped in to pick on or pick up homosexuals. The present pub dates from 1897.
