NOTICE: Venues need your support more than ever during the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Under this stage of the roadmap in England pubs can only open outdoor areas and many will only be open for customers who have pre-booked. Alcohol can now also be sold for takeaway, as well as delivery.

But please be aware that opening hours and services may be different to those displayed here. Before visiting or ordering from any venue, we strongly advise you to check its website or social media, or get in touch with them first to avoid disappointment.

If you see any details here that need updating, please let us know by submitting feedback on the pub.

Updates

Open for outside service from 12 April.

About the Pub

Large whitewashed hotel on the front at Parkgate with dramatic views over the River Dee marshes towards the Welsh hills. Cask ales are sold in the lounge which features historic photos of old Parkgate. A roaring fire can often be found in winter. The hotel enthusiastically promotes local micro-breweries such as Brimstage and Spitting Feathers.

Historic Interest

Possibly dating back to 1758, definitely named the Ship, sometimes the Princess Royal (after a locally built ship) by 1787 and listed as the Princess Royal in Pigot's Directory of 1822-23 and 1828-29 and listed as the Ship in Bagshaw's Directory of 1850. Rebuilt in 1859 incorporating the old Ship, the house in front of it and the Bulls Head (listed in Pigot's Directory of 1828-29) or Black Bull in Drury Lane behind. The new pub was then known as the Union Hotel (a Yates's Castle Brewery pub) until it reverted the the Ship in the 1960s.
