NOTICE: Venues need your support more than ever during the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Under this stage of the roadmap in England pubs can only open outdoor areas and many will only be open for customers who have pre-booked. Alcohol can now also be sold for takeaway, as well as delivery.

But please be aware that opening hours and services may be different to those displayed here. Before visiting or ordering from any venue, we strongly advise you to check its website or social media, or get in touch with them first to avoid disappointment.

If you see any details here that need updating, please let us know by submitting feedback on the pub.

Open for outside service from 14 April.

About the Pub

Reopened in November 2018 after a refurbishment which included a large conservatory extension to the lounge. Now with an emphasis on food, the bar and snug of the old pub have been retained but with a hole in the wall between the two rooms - meaning the snug is not as 'snug' as it once was.

Historic Interest

The Ale House Register of 1561 lists a pub in Barnston and although its location is unknown, it may have been on the same site as the Fox & Hounds. By 1822 there was a pub known as the Flag, later the Hen & Chickens by 1824 and the Black Horse by 1831; again, it is not known if this became the Fox & Hounds listed in Bagshaw’s Directory of 1850. There was certainly a pub operating on the site of the current Fox & Hounds from at least the 1820s as the Sportman’s Arms but was also known as the Fox & Hounds. It was an Argyle Brewery (later Birkenhead Brewery) pub from at least 1865 when it was named the Fox & Hounds. The old photos are of the old pub in the early 1900s before it was demolished and rebuilt in 1910 after which it was formally known as the Fox & Hounds - see the two later old photos.
