About the Pub

A street corner local behind Pontefract Castle, an elaborate Victorian Gothick-y building (Queen Anne style, apparently). Five real ales are on offer with beers from Bradfield and Morley breweries featured.

Historic Interest

The Hope and Anchor name originally belonged to a pub in Horsefair (1834); The original building was a dwelling house converted to a public house around 1805 and was Carter's Knottingley Brewery's first house outside Knottingley. It was rebuilt 1892 to a design by Pontefract architect, J.H. Greaves, with a parapet gable and barge board trimming. Innovative for that time was that the building was sound and damp proofed, with ½" cavity walls filled with a patented compound known as ‘Tenax Building Rock’. It was the brewery's showpiece pub.
