About the Pub
A handsome Georgian building, former White Rose Tavern, famous for raft race in summer, entertainment most weekends, handy for boat travellers. Coxley Beck flows in a stone tunnel under the canal and comes out by the pub. There was a wooden bridge over the Calder on the main road from Wakefield to Huddersfield in the 15th C. A stone arched bridge that replaced the wooden structure in the 17th C lasted until it partially collapsed in 1918. A new bridge completed in 1930 had to be replaced in 1991 at a cost of £2m. The floor in the lounge used to have a distinct sunken feeling!
