About the Pub

Since death of licensee, this has not been a pub that anyone else could have taken on. A free house which started life as a farmhouse back in 1632. No jukebox or pool table to be found in this no-nonsense boozer, just lively conversation and a larger-than-life landlord who was committed to cask ale who fought to wrest ownership of the pub due for closure by Enterprise. The pub was the meeting place for the George Formby Society (last Wed of month) and also hosted acoustic music sessions on a Sunday, when the pub stayed open all day. Opening hours were often curtailed during quiet periods It stood in as a clubhouse for Castleford Panthers Amateur Rugby League until their clubhouse was built along the road. "One of Britain's Greatest Pubs" - Roger Protz. Porch re-built with bricks rescued from demolition of Tetley's Brewery.
