About the Pub

This is very much a locals’ pub, drawing trade mainly from nearby Partington. Like many other Sam Smith’s pubs, it is almost anonymous externally, with only a traditional swinging pub sign to indicate that these are licensed premises.

The building is thought to date back to the 18th century when it was a series of cottages. Over the years it has been extended sympathetically to give the feel of a traditional multi-roomed pub. Entrance is off the main road or from the car park at the east side. Entering from the main road (so facing roughly north) you find yourself in the main bar area, with the bar to your right. This is where most of the regulars tend to congregate. Off to your left (or west) is a smaller lounge. Beyond the bar area and adjacent to the entrance from the car park there is a small snug. To the right (east) of the bar is a larger room, once used for games like pool but now designated for dining.

Outside and to the rear of the pub there is a smokers’ shelter. Beyond that is a small beer garden with a children’s’ play area.

The main rooms feature low ceilings, chintzy carpets and curtains and a number of old photographs of local scenes, of which the ones showing the construction of the nearby Manchester Ship Canal may be the most interesting.

The Windmill has seen several tenants come and go in recent years so some of the information here may quickly become outdated. At present there is no food on offer but the kitchen may re-open during 2019. If and when it does, expect the typical Samuel Smith menu (pies, bangers and mash, lasagne).

The pub is within easy walking distance of Carrington Business Park. Although buses pass the door, the pub is awkwardly located between stops.
