About the Pub

A wonderful remote period period pub with a range of locally sourced food on the menu and three real ales.

Theories differ as to how the Lowtrow Cross name came about but perhaps the most plausible explanation has a historical basis. Raleigh’s Cross was erected by Simon Raleigh who fought at the Battle of Agincourt (1415) and marked the place where the body of his wife, Joan, rested while preparations for her funeral were being made. Joan had died in Devon and so, on its way to Raleigh’s Cross, her body needed to rest en route at another cross, or in French, at L’autre croix. It’s easy to imagine that the French words came to be mispronounced “Lowtrow Cross.”

The building itself dates from the seventeenth century and used to be a working farm. When the farm was turned into a pub is not known, but it certainly was one by the early 1900s.
