About the Pub

A sprawling, labyrinthine landmark pub dating from 1665 with mainly 18th and 19th century extensions. The opened-up interior offers distinct drinking areas, with more comfortable furnishings through to the left where the domed room has a whispering gallery effect to rival that of St Paul’s Cathedral.

The pub has a sporty feeling and regularly hosts teams from the neighboring common. Rugby is a particular pub favourite.

The Burger Shack outside opens in summer.

Quiz night is Sunday.

The premises include a 42-bedroom, three-star hotel.

Historic Interest

Grade II listing;- Two-storey, 4-window early C19 stock brick front with stone-coped parapet concealing fairly highpitched hipped slated roof, suggesting earlier date. Gauged flat brick arches to sash windows with glazing bars; left first floor window lengthened, breaking cill band. Later doors. In second bay from left is a mid-late C19 feature, once a door but now a window. Canted bays on both ends, the north one weather-boarded Sash windows with glazing bars. Early-mid C19 back range has low-pitched hipped slate roof and several sash windows with glazing bars in moulded architraves.
