About the Pub
Historic Interest
Built by John Hatfield in 1544. Bought by Peter Levell in 1620. Bought by Francis Theobald (Lord of Manor) in 1653 & presented to town to help fund the Grammar school. A report in the Ipswich Journal on 15 Feb in 1812 states that : The Swan Inn, Needham Market, to be let & entered upon at Lady Day next with 10 & a half acres of very rich meadow land - Enquire of Joseph Toosey & Co, Ipswich In 1830 the "Regulator" coach service to Bury St Edmunds (via Stowmarket & Woolpit) called every afternoon at 5pm. The "Regulator" to Ipswich called every forenoon at 11am. Bought by Greene King in 1898 who sold it to Messrs Cobbold of Cliff Brewery in 1926. Greene King bought pub again in 1990. A fire in 1781 destroyed a brew-house, stable, granery, old parlour & bed chambers. The pub was then closed for 10 years.
