About the Pub
A single bar pub close to Ipswich Museum. Originally called the Arboretum, it was renamed in 2016. The name derives from the nearby arboretum (tree garden) in Christchurch Park.
There are generally two or three, well-kept, Real Ales available; normally at least one of which is a seasonal ale from a local brewer.
Historic Interest
The address was listed as 1 Claude Street until c1871, & 29 High Street by 1881 & until at least 1911. The Arboretum Hotel was put up for auction in 1852 by Mr George Turner. The property comprised of: 'entrance hall with two well fitted-up parlours; a concert or club room 33ft by 16ft 6in; airy bedrooms; stables, cart sheds; large yard with wide entrance to main street.' At a Petty Sessions hearing on 29 September 1860 The Arboretum Hotel was refused a new spirit licence. Out of the twenty four applications only three establishments were granted licences. According to the Ipswich licensing records, the Arboretum got its full (it not just beer) license on February 6th 1956. In June/July 1981 edition of Last Orders*** it was reported that after 26 years at the Arboretum, Hilda had just left the pub. In Aug/Sep 1981 edition of Last Orders*** it was reported that Barry & Teresa (French) (who were previously at Sproughton Wild Man) are the new tenants here & offering Tolly Original, Mild & Bitter on handpump. The pub was closed for a while between about September & December 2008. Photographs of this pub and more historical information about it can be found at suffolkcamra.co.uk/pubs/pub/427
