About the Pub

One of a number of historic listed pubs in the town, whose most famous inhabitant was Oliver Cromwell. The room layout and character was happily preserved in a sensitive renovation in the 1990s and has changed little since. Serves one regular real ale and a changing beers sourced from a local brewery. The house beer Royal Oak Best Bitter is brewed by Greene King There is a cider from Saxby's.

A previous Good Beer Guide entry and Hunts CAMRA Dark Beer Pub of the Year. It was also the branch LocAle Pub of the Year for 2017. However there is currently a limited selection of real ale.

No food is served apart from crisps, nuts etc. however customers are usually welcome to bring in their own food or a takeaway from the fish & chip shop across the road.

There is sometimes live music on Saturday nights.

As of October 2021 real ale choice has been reduced and occasionally none is available. Opening times are currently variable.

Despite the date 1502 over the door, most of the building dates from the 18th century.
