About the Pub

A Joule’s Taphouse with their usual quirky wooden panels, signs and sign writing.

The central bar serves a cosy front lounge and larger rear lounge. Small external yard/smoking area. This comfortable Joule's house was extensively refurbished in 2011 and is right in the heart of Stafford. It is much larger than it looks from the outside and is a well-liked pub. Four handpumps serve Joule's ales. Pizzas and bar snacks using locally sourced ingredients are available. Situated next to the Gatehouse Theatre the pub is a favourite of theatregoers and is often frequented by cast members enjoying an after-show pint. An acoustic night is held every Wednesday, quiz night on Thursdays and live music on Saturdays. Hours may vary from those shown. Largely level, main toilets are upstairs but there is an accessible toilet downstairs.

Historic Interest

The current pub was built around 1830, the extensive cellars with their arched ceilings are substantially older. These ancient cellars were part of the original Rose and Crown - 'Ye Olde Rose & Crown'. At one time despite its size the pub was an inn, the attic rooms housing the publican and his wife with the larger middle floors for paying guests. The rear still shows the distinctive arched openings for the stabling of horses, above the haylofts, now the washrooms. lThe rear courtyard would have originally been accessible from the alley which is now part of the theatre.
