About the Pub
The low beamed public bar is a cosy and welcoming place, having a couple of sofas by a very traditional log fire, some seats made out of beer casks and a quirky collection of watches hanging from the ceiling. There’s additional comfortable seating in a raised area at one end of the bar, together with a piano. The Gallery leads off from the bar. This is used for exhibiting the arts but can also double up as a more casual dining room or meeting room. The other bar (the Warehouse Bar), to the right of the front door, is equally quirky. It's quite small but is furnished with old pews. Further along again is the Warehouse restaurant, a super L-shaped room having one side looking out onto the Canal. This part of the building was indeed a warehouse in the days when the canal was busy with the substantial amount of traffic hereabouts. And of course no canalside pub would be complete without its canalside beer garden! It's probably fortunate though that the Maesbury Bone Works no longer operates. This is the site close by, that still has its chimney and which would have been rather too malodorous for garden users.
As to beer, there's always one cask ale on tap from the Stonehouse range. No worries here about beer miles! In addition, a second or third ale emerges as trade dictates. These can be from a range of usually local breweries. And not to be forgotten is the Book Exchange, together with the Navigation Shop, where you can buy some of the produce used in the pub (including fish). So, all in all, whether you want to dine or merely take a drink, the Navvy is well worth a visit. It was an entry in the early days of the Good Beer Guide from 1976 to 1980. Also it was once a part of the large local estate of the Shrewsbury & Wem Brewery.
As at October 2017, this pub has its own defibrillator.
