About the Pub

The Mytton and Mermaid is an independent 18th century Listed coaching inn situated on the banks of the River Severn. Its public rooms are tastefully done out thus giving it an air of traditional comfort. The bar is no exception, and for the real ale drinker there's the bonus of having a selection of up to four well kept ales to enjoy, possibly seated in one of the sofas. The downside is though that the beer is priced a little higher than in local pubs. (£3.90 a pint in December 2019) The name Mytton derives from that of the Shropshire squire "Mad"Jack Mytton. This was a character who, possibly through his legendary exploits as a sportsman, eccentric and drunkard, lost his fortune and ownership of the Halston Hall to pay off his debts. It's said that his funeral cortege stopped here on its way to the chapel. Mermaid is the crest of the Italianate Portmeirion hotel in North Wales. This was designed by a previous owner of this hotel, the architect Sir Clough Williams Ellis.
