About the Pub

Bought into private ownership from Marstons in July 2013, and re-opened in September 2013 as a "Freehouse - Country Bistro and Bar". Whilst it is a food led establishment, there is a bar area and those just wanting to take a drink are made welcome. It's a tastefully done out place inside with its cottage style furnishing giving it a homely feel. The Welsh border (and Offa's Dyke) is very close, hence some strange sounding place names to the untrained ear! In this case Porth-y-Waen probably means "gateway to the moor" The reference to lime kilns comes from the fact that this was once a major limestone quarrying area and the remains of the kilns lie close by.
