About the Pub
It's not difficult to see why the Horseshoes is Grade II listed. The black and white timber framed building is believed to have been a mid 15th century drovers inn. Neither does the inside disappoint, with its low beams and bare stone walls giving it that atmospheric, traditional feel that is so rarely encountered these days. Its situation on the bank of the River Tanat offering fly fishing ( day licenses need to be bought at the bar ) completes the picture of an archetypal English pub, albeit close to the Welsh border! A little up the lane to the rear of the pub, Llanyblodwel even had its own - modest - railway station on the Tanat Valley line but not surprisingly traffic was sparse and it closed in 1951! The name is possibly a mixture of English and Welsh. Llan is "church", so Llanyblodwel means "the church at Blodwel" which is a tributary of the River Tanat. It was owned at one stage by the Border Brewery of Wrexham.
Also a local club meets at the pub on the second Thursday of the month so it can get exceptionally crowded!
