About the Pub

The 18th century Grade II Listed Castle Hotel is a rather impressive place and has a great deal going for it. Its elevated position on the site of what was the castle overlooking the little town of Bishops Castle and the hills surrounding it, sets the scene. And, having entered, it does not disappoint. Although it is a small hotel, there is no doubt that this is also an excellent pub. There are three bars, each with its own character, but at the same time contributing to the overall ambience of a comfortable traditional pub that has bags of period charm. Moreover, if you visit in the winter, the fires in each room may well encourage one to linger a little longer! And it doesn’t stop there! The public bar to the rear has been extended to give access not only to a pretty terrace, but also up some steps to the garden which is rather special!

Is a participant in the annual Bishops Castle Beer Festival held each July. One of fifteen pubs in the Branch area which appeared in the first Good Beer Guide in 1974. And here's what it said! "Magnificent example of a Georgian hotel, retaining atmosphere. Meals of excellent quality, Mitchells & Butlers mild & bitter" These days, the four regular beers are supplemented by a fifth in the summer. But look out for the Real Ale Tasting Board, where one can try three of the ales, supplied in three one third pint glasses.

The Bicycle, Dog & Boot Wash Area in the car park is an unusual pub feature.
