About the Pub

Original 16th century building with extension to the rear. Two separate adjoining drinking areas where traditional bar meals are available as well as a separate carvery restaurant. The Tudor Room is available for functions and meetings. Low ceilings and plenty of beams and a display of plates, horsebrasses and mirrors. Regular barbeques in the summer. Ample parking and good sized outside drinking areas front and back. Undergone major refurb in 2019. Licensed for civil ceremonies.

Historic Interest

The woodman Inn was built in 1664 but was probably known as the Tollgate in 1700s.It was purchased by Charles Bradshaw,a Hatfield baker and brewer in 1851,who out to Edward Pryor and Percy Reid in 1888.The premises was shown as a grocers shop as well as a beer retailer during the 19th century and in 1881 the licensee George Dickens also gave his occupation as a gardener.The 1891 census shows George Dickens publican Herriet Dickens wife and Annie Day niece.
