About the Pub
Historic Interest
Following various other developments nearby, London brewer Whitbread received a public house licence to serve the Oaklands area in 1948. It chose a unique name among English pubs: the Bunch of Cherries, after the cherry orchard which was behind the plot and lined Winches Farm Drive. However, building licences were not available in 1948, which prompted Whitbread to purchase a pair of timber building site huts, which were remodelled into two inter-connected bars albeit with a proper cellar having been excavated first. The current building was erected behind the temporary pub in 1963 (on what was originally its car park) and the huts were removed for further use as local Scout headquarters huts. In 2005, the pub was sold to Suffolk brewer Greene King which, following a refurbishment, rebranded the pub The Speckled Hen - a name with no particular local connotations.
