About the Pub

A traditional pub set in the heart of the Surrey Hills, close to Wisley and Hatchlands Park and also popular with classic car enthusiasts. The main bar is split into separate areas, laid out for dining on the left hand side and with a traditional flagstone floor to the right. The pub building is large and incorporates the Malting House to the rear, which is available for functions. Food is traditional English cooking at lunchtimes with Thai food available all lunchtimes and each evening, except Sunday. The garden consists of a substantial open grassed area which is great for dogs and with seating dotted around.

Historic Interest

The original building was probably just a small cottage, built in the mid-16th century, but it was certainly an alehouse by 1598 when it was extended at both ends. In the early 17th century it was first known as The Mount Eagle and later The Harrow, but more than 100 years later it was renamed The Barley Mow when a brewhouse and a building for storing and malting barley - the present-day Malting House - were added. At that time it was also part of a small farm. At the end of the 19th century when cycling became a new, popular pastime, The Barley Mow found itself a favoured destination and, to cater for this trade, another extension, now housing the restaurant and kitchen, was added.
