About the Pub

A privately owned free house, this traditional 400-year-old inn in the village centre is full of character and has a cosy welcoming atmosphere, being oak-beamed and heavily decorated. The gas fires are very realistic and can easily be mistaken for solid fuel ones. Food is available every lunchtime and evening. The menu is seasonal and changes regularly. A children's menu is available. Booking is essential for the Sunday lunchtime carvery.

Up to six changing beers are from small breweries with a dark beer usually available in winter. Beers are from a rotating list of about 12 breweries, often from Sussex, with Langhams, Long Man and Arundel often featuring. Midland beers regularly appear through the Brewswap agency run by Milestone. "Tasters" of three one-third pint glasses are available. With these sources the pub gets through 15 to 20 different beers every week. Lagers are interesting continental imports only, and for non beer drinkers the wines are well above usual pub quality. A real cider is available in summer.

Dogs are welcome in the bar but not restaurant. Outside there are tables on the terrace facing the road and a few tables at the rear, but there is no garden as such. This is compensated by superb floral displays in the summer. The 53 bus runs hourly on evenings and Sundays, and this and other routes give three or four buses an hour from Guildford and Cranleigh in daytime during the week. Accommodation comprises 4 rooms and a 3 bed flat making this a true Inn.

Historic Interest

The wattle and daub construction style dates the building at about 400 years and has been an Inn throughout that time.
