About the Pub

A stones throw from the ancient bridge over the River Nene, this rambling old pub is situated on a bend at the northern outskirts of the village. The pub name relates to a fairly dubious yarn that Oliver Cromwell billeted himself here in 1645 just before the Battle of Naseby. Whether this is true or not, the main part of the pub is very old indeed and there is much Cromwellian memorabilia in evidence. The bar is entered through a porch way and you are greeted by 3 handpumps with full descriptions of the beer they dispense. Youngs PA is always available but the management has taken an enlightened approach with their choice of guest ales, with many independents and micros regularly represented. The cellarman has been in the business for over 20 years and is justifiably proud of his Cask Marque status. Inside the pub itself, there is a blend of traditional and contemporary design, which works very well. There are several nooks and crannies to explore and comfortable chairs and settees around the lovely ironstone fireplace. The main restaurant is in a more modern extension to the left of the bar. Beware very low ceilings in parts of the building!
