About the Pub
Historic Interest
The Fox & Grapes is on Nottingham CAMRA's Local Heritage List. It is also on the Nottingham Civic Society Local Heritage List 2013. Literally a pub in two halves, the front portion facing onto Southwell Street designed by Evans & Son, 1905-06, the Fox & Grapes frontage masks the remains of a mid-19th century building of the same name to the rear, the join best seen from Sneinton Market's Avenue C. For many years, the pub was named Peggers and was run by Banks’s. Reopened by Castle Rock Brewery under its original name in September 2017. Although the local nickname is “Pretty Windows”, nothing appears to remain of any ornate glass which gave rise to such a name. Mid-20th century photos suggest the name may have derived at least partly from the ornate window frame tracery from the Edwardian refit. On the 8th of September 1963, the landlord, ex-miner George Wilson, was brutally stabbed to death a short distance away. The unsolved killing became known as the Pretty Windows Murder [BBC East Midlands News]. The Fox & Grapes is in Nottingham City Council's Sneinton Market Conservation Area. As at November 2017, the Land Registry showed the Freehold for the Fox & Grapes (NT250068) was held by Carlton Street Trading Limited [Reg. No. 8916111]. [Nottingham City Council; St. Ann's Ward / Nottingham East Parliamentary Constituency].
