About the Pub
Small and welcoming unspoilt pub with a long, split-level interior with a laid-back ambience. Seating is a combination of high and low level bar stools and comfortable benches. There is a enclosed beer garden at the back with seating.
Historic Interest
The Dragon is on a curiously long, narrow bending property plot of apparently medieval origin and intended to give a valuable, if limited, frontage access to the Market Square / Angel row area. Originally a seventeenth-century inn called the Green Dragon, it was rebuilt in 1879 as the George & Dragon. In more recent years it was known for a while as the City Gate Tavern. (Whitworth 2010). As the George & Dragon it was for many years a Shipstone's tied house. In 1832, the George & Dragon was a fully licensed establishment under Jas. Worth (White) and in 1874 it was run by publicans D & J Morley (Wright). The Dragon is located in Nottingham City Council's Old Market Square Conservation Area and has a place on Nottingham Civic Society's Draft Local Heritage List (09 December 2013). The cave cellars measure 9m x 20m. [Referenced MNU 238 and BGS Ld10]. As at November 2017, the freehold for the Dragon (NT344948) was held by Punch Partnerships (PML) Limited [Reg. No. 3321199]. This was transferred to Patron Capital on the 5th March 2018. [Nottingham City Council; Bridge Ward / Nottingham South Parliamentary Constituency]
