About the Pub
Historic Interest
At one time, Albert's has been called the Tivoli Rock Cafe, the Fair and Firkin, Speakeasy and Spanky Van Dykes. It started life in 1910 as an early cinema, Pringle's Picture Palace. Originally owned by Ralph Pringle, one of the pioneers of British commercial cinema in the early 20th century. Pringle sold it before the start of World War I, when it became Goldsmith's Picture House. During WWII it became the Little Theatre showing rep and then in 1948 it became the Playhouse Theatre until 1963, after which it became a carpet shop (McGrath 2015).
