Natural Pubs

About the Pub

Popular corner house previously named after local author of Robinson Crusoe fame and built in the 1860s. In 2015 the lease was taken on by The Yummy Collection as a "tea-themed" pub, hence its then name change but it seemed a lot of people did not like that so it has, in Aug 2017, reverted to its original name. Pleasant walled garden. Grade II listed in 1975. Lease acquired by Natural Pubs in 2020.

Historic Interest

Grade II listing:- 3-storey, 2-window mid C19 building of stock brick with stuccoed dressings. Alternating block quoins support entablature with modillion cornice and tall parapet inscribed : CLARENCE TAVERN. Moulded architraves with scrolled feet to 2nd floor sash windows. Panelled pilasters with console bracketed cornices and pediments to 1st floor sash windows. Banded rusticated ground floor with mmoulded and modillioned fascia cornice. Glazing altered, but stallrisers and top window grilles original. Rear extension to Bouverie Road continues cornice. Ionic pilasters support entablature and frame round arched windows with moulded architraves and vermiculate key blocks. Ionic porch in angle has blocked door. Cast iron area railings.
