NOTICE: Venues need your support more than ever during the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

A nationwide lockdown is currently in place in England, and you are required by law to stay at home. Hospitality venues can still provide food takeaway and delivery services, but can only sell alcohol by delivery service.

But please be aware that opening hours and services may be different to those displayed here. Before visiting or ordering from any venue, we strongly advise you to check its website or social media, or get in touch with them first to avoid disappointment.

If you see any details here that need updating, please let us know by submitting feedback on the pub.

About the Pub

In October 2020 Greene King announced that 79 of their pubs would remain closed and that it was likely that some of them would not re-open. It looks as if the Old dairy might be one of those. The website id dead and emails sent to them have bounced. It's been closed and boarded since lockdown. No sign of any activity or boards saying for sale or to let etc.

Oddly enough the building was just that - Friern Manor Dairy Farm, established 1839, this building dates from 1889. With its crenelated exterior, minarets and large relief etchings extolling the virtues of the various processes in producing milk, it certainly presents an unusual sight. It's received an impressive make-over and, with such a large space to work with, can successfully offer separate dining arrears without impinging upon the overall pub feel. It has the now standard mix of large tables and sofas, illuminated by table lamps plus candles and with huge picture windows either end. The atmosphere is added to by impressive chandeliers, exposed brick walls and duct work with steel girders. There are lots of different areas to eat or drink - details of food and serving times are best obtained for their website. With 5 pumps and an ever-changing range what's on can change daily.

Historic Interest

Grade II listed:- Dairy and shop. No 1 the former premises of Friern Manor Dairy Farm Limited; no 3 a shop. c.1895. Brown glazed brick, red rubbed brick with stone dressings, sgraffito, roofs obscured by parapet. Single-storey. The dairy front has a base of brown glazed brick; elliptical-arched carriage entrance with foliage imposts of stone carrying a stone archivolt reverting to rubbed brick in the middle section; five bays to left of the entrance, two to the right: round-arched panels with stone foliage imposts and archivolts with roll-mouldings, flanked by Corinthian pilasters; the panels filled with scenes in sgraffito depicting dairy processes, from left to right: grazing, milking, cooling, country delivery, making butter, old-style delivery and present-day delivery; frieze of swags interspersed with heads in cartouches; scrolled parapet interrupted over the third bay from the left by a panel with incised lettering: 'ESTABLISHED A0 1836 DI', and by a panel over the entrance inscribed 'FRIERN MANOR DAIRY FARM LIMITED',this panel topped by a stone panel with consoles depicting a mythological-cum-dairy scene. Two octagonal cupolas with louvred lantern stage, lead-covered ogee roofs and iron sunflower finials behind the parapet. No 3 has a C20 shop front flanked by pilasters with possibly vestiges of original shop front behind the modern fascia; cornice with festooned brackets; parapet of composition stone with cartouche in central brick panel. The sgraffito panels are very unusual in being pictorial and in a street; there is not very much late nineteenth century sgraffito work, and what there is is almost always decorative in treatment or in churches.
