About the Pub

August 2021 - sems to have reopned after a closure just before lockdown.

From the Islington Gazette April 2021, "After spending 20 years as event promoters, James Rix and Fergus Harrington were adamant they would never own their own venue. But after the North by North West Pub in New North Road shut in March, they negotiated a deal with the landlord, and Knowhere Special Islington was born." Full link

Most of the information we have on the pub pre-dates its new operation so will need updating. What follows is as was

The North by North West Pub has gone - it is no more. It was closed early March before the Lock Down. There has been a lot of Building work being done and our reporter would say future uncertain whether it will be a Pub again. Sadly over this year before lock down when having a look in there were 3 Handpumps but sadly No Real Ale available.

Reopened under new management end Sept 2015. Thursday quiz. Two for one food on Mondays. From a news release - London-based movie theme pub operator Wesley Deaton has opened his second site in Islington. Deaton has acquired The North Pole in New North Road, which has been rechristened North by Northwest after Alfred Hitchcock’s famous Cary Grant spy thriller. He has spent months decorating the pub with memorabilia and plastering the walls with Hitchcock film posters and dramatic photographs of the man himself. Models of jet-black crows are perched above the bar, and the North by Northwest crop duster hangs from the ceiling. Hitchcock landed his first industry job in motion pictures at the nearby Gainsborough Studios, which has now been transformed into luxury flats, in the 1920s.

Deaton told the Islington Tribune: “We’re going to serve the best Sunday roast in town and loads of great local beers. We’re beside Gainsborough Studios, which is where Hitchcock started from, so that’s where we got the idea.” Deaton also runs the Alma Pub in Newington Green, which reopened as a movie-themed pub in October 2014. A survey in Oct 2017 revealed "just London Pride and a 'Heineken' brewed house beer. No call for real ale, apparently." However a subsequent visit by another reviewer found Hammerton N1 on sale, so may be a bit of a moving feast!
