About the Pub
Closed 01/01/2021 and to-let following death of licensee, Steve Alexander. A multi-award winning free house, so no wonder the Crown is a busy pub, especially in the evenings. A choice of around seven ever-changing beers are usually to be had (including a mild, stout, and/or porter), making it one of the town's more interesting cask ale outlets. Beers from Pictish and Copper Dragon are normally available too, and on the last Friday and Saturday of each month, the pub presents a ‘brewery tap’ of around four beers from a changing, premium brewery. Four rooms radiate from the busy bar, two compact snugs, a large lounge with feature overmantle, and lastly a plainer pool room. The atmosphere is one of friendly professionalism aided by knowledgeable staff. Up to four cask ciders are available, often sourced by Merrylegs. Live music is a feature of Weds and Suns, with the large yard and atractive outdoor seating area to the rear often (Fri) show-casing larger acts such as local rock bands, folk, acoustic and more. It serves too as a beer garden and barbecue area. History: local branch Pub of the Year 2008, and runner-up nationally in CAMRA's Pub of the Year for 2009.
