About the Pub

One can enter from the front through a small, hedged and well-tended garden with some outside seating, into the comfortable, oak panelled Lounge Bar with a real fire in a carved stone fireplace. There is also a real fireplace in the rear Lounge and on the other side of the bar there is a small vault extension. There is an extensive, well-appointed covered outdoor area and small car park at the rear and a much larger car park across the road. Originally 18th century cottages opened up into 'The Knapsack' Inn near Pump Farm. The first landlord was John Brown ('The Nap') and then it was owned by generations of Turners and then by the Bromleys who also owned Ravenoak Hall/Oakley Manor across the road, now the Governor’s House. Bought by Robinsons in 1880 and possibly their second pub. The building was either greatly altered or extended at the rear in the 1850s. This area is where excellent food is now served (11.30am-2.30, 5-9.30 Mon-Thu; 11.30am-9.30 Fri-Sat; 12-7.30 Sun), but book in advance. Breakfast is served daily from 8am.

Historic Interest

Acquired by Frederic Robinson in 1880.
