About the Pub

As of 2021, run as a "more-than-profit" social enterprise, with all profits reinvested in the building and used for community initiatives, the 'Whippy' is a welcome addition to the Withington area. Downstairs is a small wood-panelled snug and a much larger room, formerly occupied by a snooker table, which is used as a performance space, drinking area and is where you will find the on-site pizzeria. A further room is upstairs. A variety of events, workshops and exhibitions (such as cinema, art classes, markets, comedy, quizzes, and more...) are held here with the aim of becoming a focal point for the whole local community. If an event is on (such as Arts and Vintage Traders Market), then the place will open on Sundays when vegetarian lunches are also available to take away or eat in. Apart from the cask beers, there are four guest kegs and a variety of cans from local craft breweries. There is a small experimental brewing kit in the cellar which is used by Burton Road Brewery and as of Summer 2022 was producing beers on an adhoc basis. Burton Road's beers were for some time brewed at Mobberley Brewhouse.

Historic Interest

Donated to the community by Lord Egerton having been built in 1861, as proudly proclaimed in the exterior brickwork, Withington Public Hall & Institute has been a members’ club since 1906. Between 1861-1911 it housed a lending library for Withington prior to the modern library being built further north in the village. Its old nickname was ‘The Homewreckers’ as it provided the men of the area early and late drinking facilities in the days of restricted pub opening hours.
