About the Pub

For about 70 years the premises were occupied by Arthur Chiverton, a drapery and millinery business. His name can still be seen in mosaic at the entrance and it is this business that provides the inspiration for the name and design of the pub. "Keep it small and keep it simple" is the ethos, but as the old shop was double-fronted this gives the premises a light and airy feel. Good use has been made of the space with a bar against part of the back wall and an eclectic mix of tables, chairs and fixed seating at once creating a homely, lived-in feel. The building’s past life has been cleverly referenced throughout – there are framed displays of old drapery goods on the walls and inset into the bar front, while some of the ceiling lights are formed from old dress patterns. Even the door to the toilets acts as a blackboard menu for the draught products. The drinks emphasis is on local suppliers as far as possible. One of the casks is from Bollington Brewery and serves as a house beer. Similarly three of the keg fonts are reserved for Bury’s Outstanding Brewery. You can get three thirds of a pint for the price of a pint in what they amusingly call 'beer tapas'. All of the other beers, cask and keg, will change on a regular basis with the beers being sourced mainly from Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire. There are bottle beers and a traditional "bag in box" cider. Even the spirits are local with artisanal gins from Forest Gin of Macclesfield, Hunters of Knutsford and Langton Gin from the Lake District. Food is available in the form of superior pies and patties – again locally supplied. Get in early though as there is room only for about 50 people, including standees, although plans of May 2018 are afoot to expand the seating area to include the currently unused first floor. Voted CAMRA local Pub of the Year for 2017. History: Opened 16/5/2015 as Stockport’s first micropub, one of a new breed of public houses that is slowly spreading across the country. The people behind the business are lawyers Bob and Mary Ellis, along with catering and hospitality lecturer Andrew O’Shea.
