NOTICE: Venues need your support more than ever during the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

A nationwide lockdown is currently in place in England, and you are required by law to stay at home. Hospitality venues can still provide food takeaway and delivery services, but can only sell alcohol by delivery service.

But please be aware that opening hours and services may be different to those displayed here. Before visiting or ordering from any venue, we strongly advise you to check its website or social media, or get in touch with them first to avoid disappointment.

If you see any details here that need updating, please let us know by submitting feedback on the pub.

Premises Status

This pub is currently closed. We thought the Bitterne Park Hotel had not reopened after March lockdown, initially this was said to be due to some renovation work, but it did open in December but in breach of Covid regulations for which it lost its licence. The news story 29/03/2021 is that it will reopen on 17th May as Mbuntu Cocktail Bar; Licence applied for 29/03/2021.

About the Pub

This description and all but contact details elsewhere refer to the pub when it was the Bitterne Park Hotel.

A coaching inn was established on this site in 1686 and parts of the current building possibly date from the 18th century when there was a rebuild following a fire, though the brickwork looks slightly newer than this suggesting another later rebuild. This huge pub dominates the views east from Cobden Bridge. The original three bars have been merged into one but with enough of the interior walls left intact to give the feeling of separate areas. The high ceilings give a feeling of size and airiness, while still retaining a bit of cosiness. The long bar has two handpumps in the middle, but as of March 2019 neither were in use. One of the three areas is a games area with pool, darts and slot machines.
