About the Pub
The White Horse is a very smart hotel in the middle of Romsey. The hotel has over 500 years of history; perhaps the most interesting remnants are some Tudor wall paintings of motifs and roses. A courtyard on the left leads to the entrance, and the bar is to the left of reception; being open all day to non-residents. Breakfast hours are 7am-10am Mon-Fri and 7.30am-10.30am Sat & Sun. As well as breakfast, lunch and dinner served in the brasserie, the bar serves a snack menu all day, including a wide range of teas. A formidable array of whiskies is also available.
The hotel was transferred to the National Crimes Agency to settle a civil court claim May 2019. It continued running until the end of September and fully reopened after a short closure but under a new management company.
Historic Interest
Built late 15th century or early 16th century, with later 18th/19th century alterations, on the site of an earlier medieval inn of which the stone cellars survive. The White Horse has been Romsey's principal inn since medieval times and may have been a guest house for the Abbey, founded in the 9th century [from Historic England listing notes]. Grade II* listed. Historic England list UID: 1232184.
