NOTICE: Venues need your support more than ever during the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Under this stage of the roadmap in England pubs can only open outdoor areas and many will only be open for customers who have pre-booked. Alcohol can now also be sold for takeaway, as well as delivery.

But please be aware that opening hours and services may be different to those displayed here. Before visiting or ordering from any venue, we strongly advise you to check its website or social media, or get in touch with them first to avoid disappointment.

If you see any details here that need updating, please let us know by submitting feedback on the pub.

About the Pub

This popular local can be found in a village only eight miles from Chester. A white-painted terrace, it is graced by an attractive cobbled frontage, bedecked with flowers in spring and summer. The front steps lead you into a deceptively large interior of low, beamed ceilings, scrubbed oak tables and central bar with three sides for serving. The decor includes shelves of interesting old bottles, china plates, fresh and dried flowers and jugs hanging from the timbers everywhere! There is a nice, leaded grate in the left front room surrounded by old photos of the village and locality. To the right is a real gem of a snug, with wooden settles and its own fireplace. Passing the ornate spiral staircase and piano is a large rear room for diners. The traditional interior is comfortable and relaxing, except during busy times, which are encouragingly frequent. Although it has been converted to open plan, the Sportsmans retains a village atmosphere. Darts and pool have their own room. A bowling green sits behind the pub and a nearby swing is provided for children.

The Sportsmans is a pub which has changed little over the years, and has never lost its charm; it is one of those few rural pubs which is not totally dominated by its food trade. Local trade alone would make it busy, but custom flocks from other villages and from Chester. It is an ideal stop for visitors to the region intent on taking in what the Cheshire countryside has to offer. This includes the Cheshire Ice Cream Farm and the Cheshire Candle Workshop.

Very good value meals are served in a large dining area which opens onto a patio.

Beers are from Thwaites but there is also one free of tie which is from the likes of Brimstage and Salopian.
