About the Pub

Historic 17th Century inn with some parts believed to date back to the 1300’s, it is situated on the east of the town near to the site of one of the original gates, known as the Lion Gate. From the time when Hay was protected by walls in medieval times. It is reputed that Oliver Cromwell resided at the inn while besieging Hay Castle with his Roundhead army, and one part is named after him. It remains a very popular place to stay providing a cosy base from which to explore Hay and the surrounding scenic countryside. The interior is charming with low beams and scrubbed tables in the Lion’s Den which serves as bar and dining room. The menu is carefully balanced and certainly appetising attracting diners from far and wide. While it has built a reputation as something of a gastro pub there is certainly a welcome for those just requiring liquid refreshment. Underneath the hop flowers decorating the bar lurk two handpumps, one serving the house ale, Old Black Lion Ale (aka Butty Bach) from Wye Valley, the other a guest ale that is changed occasionally.
